Can you post a photo? If not, tell us about the growing conditions...pot, drainage, soil, light, how often you water, etc. The leaves should not have died.

You need to dig your finger way down into the pot! If your pot is sitting in something without drainage, the surface of the soil could be dry, but the roots may be sitting in damp soil and are rotting!! Hippeastrum hate to have wet feet and they protest just as you have described. They pout and then they die! Please check the soil down around the roots and give the soil some better drainage! I don't know what you mean by a container that hugs the bulb. You don't need a great photo to give us an idea of what's going on.

Loretta, as long as your bulb didn't show signs of rot, your bulb will probably recover. Hopefully you repotted it in a pot with drainage.

The Amaryllis Belladonna does not have leaves when it flowers. In Australia they call this bulb "Naked Lady" because of the lack of leaves. The leaves are only there before it flowers. Watering it too much is not a good idea as they appear to love the sun and absorb all the sun in their bulbs which can be enormous, for reproduction. We tend to ignore our bulbs and do not water often and they are now beautiful!
