Where are you finding it?

Might be cicada grubs

Hmm, I've never seen those. I looked around and only found segmented grub looking things. I didn't see anything smooth like it shows in that image.

In the ground when digging, and when I moved a pail, they were on the top of the ground like earthworms will do.

I don't think it's cicada grubs, because we have had cicadas forever and I have never seen these.

Top photo looks like one end might be somewhat segmented - could it be a not-quite-formed japanese beetle (junebug) grub?

I think dbarron is correct. I searched and the closest I could find was the crane fly grub.

I was getting itchy, so I had to stop looking at photos. each

I found it: crane fly larva. They eat plant roots. They are called leather - somethings, like leather necks, but I don't think that is the extract name.

Crane flies look like gigantic mosquitos.

And now they seem to be hatching! They are all over the place.

I had one come in (apparently) in the spaghnum of an orchid from Florida in coccoon. It emerged about two weeks ago as a mature adult (in the house)...joy.
