Kitchen, Hallway, Dining room floor

Our house is a 1950s cape. We have beautiful original hardwoods in the bedrooms and living room. The previous owner put carpet in the dining room, then laminate in the kitchen (that looks nothing like the hardwoods) and the same carpet in the square hallway connecting the kitchen to the 2 bedrooms, living room, and bathroom. I wanted to get new floors put in the hallway, kitchen, and dining room. At first I was thinking about seeing if the hardwoods could be matched, but then again with 2 young kids and a dog I wasn't sure if I wanted to go that route yet. I love a modernized checkerboard floor. Would it look silly to have the same floor in the dining room, kitchen, and hallway? The dining room is the room we all walk into from the outside. Then you step up into the kitchen (which eventually that wall we will be bringing halfway down to a bar top) and follow through the kitchen to the squared hallway. I hope I am explaining this right. Sorry if I confused anyone. What would you all recommend?

i dont think that's silly at all in a cape. you can mark out the dining area of the dining room with an area rug under the table.

Right now I feel like there are so many different types of flooring in my house it is driving me crazy. Which I know is okay because it isn't an open floor plan, but I'd rather keep it to a minimum. I am unsure why the previous owner didn't carry the laminate from the kitchen into the hallway. Rather, he used the carpet from the dining room into that hallway and they are on opposite ends of the house.

Adorable place! First, you may have hardwood under the carpet and laminate that can be refinished. Those older homes frequently had hardwood throughout. If not, you could retain the diner feel in the kitchen with the checkboard, but transition to a coordinating tile in the other spaces if you don't find hardwood under the carpet. Too much checkerboard might be overwhelming in smaller spaces. Wood-look tile would be great for traffic areas, and is easily cleaned.

Thank you sooz001. Unfortunately no hardwoods =( I checked. I like the checkerboard, but more modernized. In a light gray and white.
