I live almost on the equator and realize the following, when I do the pruning and plants are not directly exposed to sunlight is born only a branch. When plants are exposed to direct sunlight sprout more branches after pruning.

I know with many different Genus of plants. If growing in hot sun, they will grow stout with more branching in order to shade shade soil to keep cooler.

This of course is with intense sun and not minimal hours.

Those babies are so cute. I too now have the very contagious obsession after only starting out in October last year. I have 54 babies and just planted another 70+ seeds. Also just received my seeds from Mr Ko today plus have a pod about to open and I can't help it, I will be planting every single one. Can't risk giving them away in the case that there might be something special. I have just repotted my young babies (approx 3 mths old) in new soil cause I haven't been happy with the mix I was using as it dried out too fast so I'm hoping that mine will start to thicken up more and start to look like yours. I just love the bums on your little fellows. There is so much more to these plants than a pretty flower.

You are so correct, Christine. The best part about adeniums is that they respond so quickly to what you do that it's easy to recover from a misstep and even better, it doesn't take 4 years to see your results (I speak as someone who has a Pachypodium brevicaule seedling).

Fantastic plants, Andrew. I prune generously too, no matter what season. In the winter, it just means it wont grow back until it warms up.

Andrew, did u prune the tops of all the 2 month old babies to make them branch out more and if so do u think that helps in the size of the caudex?

I did pinch back the tallest of the younger set, though I can't say for certain that it has made their caudexes thicker.

The older ones have been cut back two or three times, and with few exceptions I can say that the severely pruned ones in the photos above are the fattest of the bunch. But again, not 100% sure if they got that way from pruning or if they were like that before.

You'd think that as as a person schooled in economics with an analytical job that I'd be a little more scientific with this. :-)

Those look excellent Andrew! I really like that variegated one. Did you get these seeds from auctions on eBay, or did you order direct?

I got these all from Mr. Ko on ebay.

Very curious to see what will happen with that variegated one. It was a total fluke, only 1 out of 80+ seeds that germinated. Kind of looks like it's going to revert though.

They are marvelous plants, Andrew. Your tutorial will definitely be very helpful to us all.

I prune regularly, but definitely prefer to pinch out when very young, as I find that the pinching/pruning is less apparent when the seedling matures with the laterals that are produced.

I had my first Variegated from all of the seeds that I have started since 2010 and was very excited. My acquaintances in S. Africa & Australia have tole me how they may not hold the variegation as it matures. Mine looks to be reverting to plain green. They mentioned that they can go back to variegated later on, but no guarantee's. Many graft the variegated piece onto rootstock to retain.

Your seedling looks bigger, so hopefully with that, it will retain. I hope so, for you.
