Pet stores? Sometimes they have New Zealand Sphagnum moss- people use it for bedding I guess.

I get it at Home Depot, house plant area.

It may seem odd but Walmart, Home Depot, and Lowe's carry sphagnum moss. You can also order it from Amazon.

Some is not suited for Orchids. New Zealand or Chilean are the safest bet.

I'm thinking the quality has to do with how it's harvested. If they pick out the good stuff or if they just grab a bunch of moss and leaves and sticks.

I just ordered their (CAL West) largest bale of AAA New Zealand moss. Total cost including California sales tax was $112. Most of the SM found at HD and regular nurseries is garbage. It also comes in AAAAA quality but unless you are trying to grow Disas, that is not necessary.
