Foyer Rug

I have a foyer that is mostly white and dark brown. What color/type of rug would be good near the main doorto replace the temporary green doormat? . I was looking at Joss and Main for rugs.

You need a much larger rug. A rectangular rug that is the width of the door extending almost the center medallion. An oriental rug with reds and blues would be lovely.

I do not want to cover the medallion. The door is 7ft. So a 5x7 would almost bring it from the door to the starting of the stairs. Also looking for a more modern rug.

You want to be able to step inside the door and still easily be on the rug. No stepping off to shut the door even. I am wondering if you took the rug to where the wall juts a bit....is that large enough?

Hi, Dayakar! From what I've gathered on the picture it looks like your home has a no-shoes policy :) -- this means that the ease of cleaning the entryway rug you will replace your green doormat with is not going to be an issue. (It's one of the things you want to take into account when choosing a foyer rug, you know.) Anyways, based on my experience, for entryways such as yours, considering the medallion, its white and dark brown color--a few types and shapes of rugs would actually go perfectly with it.

A Multi Colored Classic Ikat Wool Rug would absolutely extend the aesthetic life of a rug way longer than if you choose a rug with a simple, solid design. Here's a couple of Ikat Rugs that will sit just right on your foyer (oh, and you want to place this adjacent to the door and also leave sufficient vertical air gap between the rug and the door - so it won't wear out quick from the constant rub of the door's opening and closing):

Check out this rug here: Ikat Rugs

    Or this..

And since you got an arched front door and an almost spiral stairs right there - a round shaped Chobi Ziegler Rug will look really elegant on your foyer plus it'll warm up your space and make it feel more welcoming. So here goes:

Alrighty, so hope that helps. Oh, if you want to ask a designer directly and help you out for free (yes, for free) take advantage of my Free Design Service right here--> Ask A Designer For Free and we will be more than happy to make it easier for you. :)

These look good. If I want into introduce another color into all the all brown and white of my home, what other color might complement this foyer?

Slate blue, one of my favorites with brown and white.

I'd go with a color, something inviting. What colors do you have in the rooms that you see when you enter? Don't put in a busy pattern that would take away the focus from the medallion. Consider tone on tone rather than multiple colors. Take a look at HomeDecorators.com for rugs.

I like these from Joss and Main Calvin Klein rugs. They have a combination of blue and brown.

    Your foyer is gorgeous!

I like this blue one: http://www.homedecorators.com/images/items/large/l12341330.jpg

Red would also be great color there, I think:)

Personally I like the Martha Stewart scrollwork the best. It has character but doesn't compete will the mosaic. It compliments it very nicely. But you might want to hold off buying the rug until you have decided on the colors in your other rooms that are visible upon entering.

Some more pictures with a old rug that I have. Its red and about 5' 3" x 7' 6 ". I have also attached a closeup of the medallion. I thought about the neutral sisal rug but there is too much brown and white and its getting boring.

Wall color is scotch mist and trim is horse radish from PPG.

The links to your choices are all lovely. I think any of the blues would really compliment your foyer. My suggestion, if it's possible, is to bring home a few samples; until you see them in your room you'll be second guessing.

That rug is much better in size and the color works too.

Very pretty foyer. Check out Dash and Albert for rugs. They have been a designer favourite for years and some are outdoor/ indoor.. Loads of patterns and colours. Traditional rugs, be they Persian, Indian or Chinese will also work.

Does your staircase wall curve? Make a simpler vignette there. Have you considered using a slim pedestal topped with a floral arrangement or a bust on the medallion? It wouldn't cover much of the center of it. I see shoes at the door. You might place a standard door mat outside the door and offer a spot to sit down and switch from outdoor shoes to Asian indoor socks. that nook right of the stairs could make a storage spot for the shoes. Try a simple boot tray there. I really think a rug of any kind will detract from what is going on with your floors.
