Heuchera 'Georgia Plum'

Here's three Heuchera cultivars that are looking very promising in the Perennial Trial Garden at Colorado State University.

Nice looking Canyon Duet! How long have you had it? I haven't had much luck with Heucheras. The majority of mine look good like that the first year, only fair the second year, and then it's downhill.

I always amend planting areas with compost as our mountain soils (gravel?), while well drained, are lacking in organic matter and nutrient holding capacity. My garden is just coming out from under a layer of snow. There is evidence of vole activity in the garden this winter and I fear my Heuchera 'Canyon Duet' may have been a victim of the dastardly creatures. It will be several more weeks before I know for sure. I may have to get a military drone with night vision and go after those suckers. I will re-plant it again as it has been the best blooming cultivar for my conditions.

If you have voles eating your plants, next time you plant put the plant in a root cage. Dig a hole, put the cage in the hole and plant the plant in the cage. They might be hard to find, try a large nursery (not a big box store). I used to use them when I lived in gopher infested property.
