twigs are normally seed grown .... and that is where you got male and female plants ...

If your plants are Corylus amercana, commonly called American hazel, you do not have separate male and female plants. Corylus americana is monoecious. That is, male and female reproductive parts appear on a single plant. This is the opposite of dioecious where separate male and female plants are required for reproduction. Perhaps the male buds are more visible or it is possible - I think - that immature plants set more male buds than female. In any case, there's no reason to do anything with the suckers.

Should have included this in my first post, but wanted to check for accuracy first. The male parts are catkins such as you would find on a birch tree. The female flowers are much smaller and emerge from the tips of twigs. Until they appear in the spring, it would be very difficult to see anything but twig. Even when they do appear they are small and not striking. Once pollinated they swell, become more obvious and produce nuts in clusters. As with many monoecious fruit and nut varieties, American hazelnut is self-fertile, but will produce larger crops with cross pollination. Your planting should be just right for producing good crops for the enjoyment of both people and wildlife.

We have native hazelnuts and I've never seen a mature nut. The critters must enjoy them however since I have seen immature nuts.
