How can I improve this layout?

Floorplan · More Info

How can I change this layout and still keep the sink in the center of the island, and the cooktop in the longer wall? Should I move the cooktop more to one side? If I move it to the right, it will be in front of the DW, if I move the DW, then unloading it might be tricky having to go around it to get to the cabinets. If I move the cooktop to the left, it may be too off center? Now the cooktop is in front of the sink, and I can see how that could be an issue if two people are working at the same time. I'm in need your expert ideas!

Are you 100% committed to having the cleanup on the island?

Hum..... I'm going to double check those numbers. Assuming I can work out the distance between the cabinets and the island, how about the cooktop placement in relation to the sink and the DW?

If you're committed to the layout and really just want the sink and cooktop to be farther apart, just move the cooktop farther down the counter. It absolutely does not need to be centered. Function first, then form. However, there are functional issues you could improve but need to know the dimensions first before recommendations can be made.

Are there two fridges? What's the area marked "fridge" toward the bottom left?

Carrie B - the second fridge is in the Utility room.

I'm thinking I'd rather see this kitchen as a galley. If you can move that lower door farther to the left (where the utility room fridge is now) that would be ideal. But even without moving the door, having the run on the left, and then a run on the right (no island) is what comes to my mind as a good functional shape. You could then move the fridge to the right hand wall, and have both the sink & the range on the left, assuming that's an exterior wall, you could have a window or two on that wall that you'd end up using for prep.

I hate seeing such a nice big island having it's surface broken by a sink. 1.) Dirty dishes on the island right in front of the LR. 2.) A big island lets you spread your work out. 3.) If eating at the island do you want everyone to be staring at a sink full of dirty dishes during their meal? 4.) Can the dishes be cleaned while kids are doing their homework on the island (or someone else using it for a non-cooking activity?)

If you move the sink to the counter wall, then you can follow Marcolo's Ice-Water-Stone-Fire rule. From the fridge to the sink for first prep, then to counter near the cooktop for 2nd prep, then to cooking and then back to cleanup.

Consider moving the cooktop towards the corner. Corner cabinets aren't the most efficient use of space, so transforming that corner into a cook area might be something to think about and it also puts your cooking in close proximity to your ovens.

That sounds good, Alex H. And the dishwasher between sink and fridge is convenient to putting dishes away without turning around. Then the island is free for rolling out cookies, lunch or breakfast assembly, eating, or serving buffet style.
