I grew some dutch iris last year. After their foliage died down, I dug the bulbs and replanted in fall. It seems like the bulbs tend to rot if left in the ground.

As is the experience of many, I suppose, I planted them, admired them, and never saw them again. Cannot afford to plant such items. I need dependably perennial plants, while congratulating any that can grow them. This is a rainy zone 7a, with acid, sandy soil.

Yes, that was my previous experience with Dutch Iris - I planted them, they came up and bloomed in the Spring, and they never appeared again. I sense in zone 6 they have to be planted New every year. Ugh !

I'll echo - the first year they were gorgeous. Never saw the flowers again, although four years later a few of them must still be down there because they still send up a few pathetic scraggly stalks that have appeared again this year. But that will be gone in a month or two and that's all that's left of them.

I planted them in full sun in a place with good drainage.

I did love them the year they bloomed though. Stunning things.

Well, the bulbs that I planted in the fall grew green foliage during late fall. I will let you know how they do this spring.

Mine come back every year and have multiplied and have been in the ground 5+ years. I'm in zone 7b north GA.

I'm in zone 7A in South New Jersey - I just planted 25 Dutch Iris bulbs in pots. They will be transplanted into the ground after blooming and I'll see if they ever come up again, but my history tells me they won't !

They're certainly lovely...I seem to have inherited some (I think that's what it is) with a new house. I'm looking forward to seeing if I get only foliage or flowers as well.

I have Dutch Iris that come up each year and behave nicely. The best of these are in a position where they receive more water than the other Dutch irises. BUT, I live in a deprived climate, where we rejoice when the clouds come over and give up their precious drops.

And now (isn't it always the way?) I have decided that I prefer bearded iris to Dutch iris. I think they have a prettier flower, even though they have beards. Perhaps the Dutch Iris came to me too easily and I have never really valued them, whereas the bearded iris was one that I took from a bunch of freebies and then watched it multiply over the years.

Lol, and I regard the bearded iris that are EVERYwhere as almost weeds...yes, its' what you don't have.

WEEDS! OMG! I love Bearded Iris and have just planted a ton of them and have more on the way. Next Spring will be a stellar "Iris" year for me. But I have also planted 4 pots of Dutch Iris bulbs this year and they are already coming up. I can't wait. I love Dutch Iris.

Today I noticed bloom stalks forming on some of my dutch iris, in upstate SC 7b.
