Need help for designing roof top

Hey,

My first thread and I hope I will be posting right, even though we are planning for something bigger than a balcony.

Anyhow, we are helping out this customer with designing and decorating a roof top. It is about 100 square meter (we are Swedish) and we would like it to be something similar to the picture attached.

We are normally only doing interior, this is actually our first roof top designing so we are very eager to make it look good. In Sweden and especially in the bigger/older cities the roofs are not "allowing" for terraces since they are all V shaped. This is a newly built project so therefor we have the opportunity.

What we are in need of is some plants that both deliver beauty during the summer as well as not dying during the winter. The conditions in Sweden are 25 degrees June,July/August and windy. During November/December/January/February/March the day temperature is below 0. We want some exotic plants as the ones showing in the picture.

What recommendations do you have for us?

That is about 3 times larger than my rooftop garden. The building has to be able to hold the weight. If you are the plant specialist you may need an engineer to build for weight. If you are the engineer than It would pay to get a landscaper with the needed plant knowledge.

It totally depends on what load bearing that roof is what you can do with it- or not do with it.

If the roof is built to support a garden, then you are probably ok. If it's just a regular roof, it might need additional support for a garden like what you have pictured.

But there are bamboos that are pretty cold hardy, and lots of various bushes and plants.

Hi Thomas, I built a container garden on my 350 square foot terrace last summer. I live in Montreal, where the temperature has spent a lot of time (too much!) below -20C. I don't know yet that my plants have survived the first winter, but I did spend alot of time researching the plants that could withstand our cold and our temperature fluctuations. I insulated my containers to reduce the extrêmes of température fluctuations. I took into account the fact that the plants were more vulnerable in containers, and chose specimens that had an appropriate adult size for a container garden. My choices were acer ginnala, elaeagnus angustiflora, several cultivars of pinus, picea, taxus and juniperus. I also have a spirea, a beautiful aronia melanocarpa, an ilex verticillata and a Hamamelis mollis. I have a berberis and a dwarf ginkgo that I am very fond of and hope they will be OK. Hope this gives you some ideas!
