where to order hydrangea?

Hi, I want to get Zinfin Doll and Bloomstruck hydrangea this spring and Wayside has them both. Wayside seem to get a lot of negative feedback on Daves Garden so not sure if I should order there? I don't think anyone in my town will get those 2 hydrangea so will probably have to order. Trying to decide where to order.

Thanks, brooks23

I don't see where to put my planting zone. This format is new to me and having a little trouble getting used to it.

I had good and bad experiences with them too to the point that I like their website/catalogs but do not buy from them. Look up proven winners's website. They are the wholesaler for ZD and, using their website (or by phone), you could find out what loc al or mail order nurseries sell their products.

Bloomstruck is part of the Endless Summer Series (Bailey Nurseries) so you could try the same approach too (call them and ask for local retailers or look in their website to see if they already provide that info). I have seen ES hydrangeas at Lowes and Walmart as well as many local nurseries. Bailey's ES website may be able to help you find who will get ESs. Then you can call them & ask someone if they have ordered Bloomstruck from the ES Guys.

I agree about the planting zone issue. I did not have time to mess with that so I am ignoring it.

Thanks for the good suggestions. I searched a little and Menards should get some of the ES but not sure if it will be Bloomstruck. We are having snow and it is so tempting to order on line while waiting for spring. I would rather buy in town so I can get a bigger size.

Bummer! We don't always get a big selection of plants in my town so the catalogs are tempting but I am going to try to wait and buy locally. I like the Wayside catalog but puny plants are a dissapointment.

For the garden zone and approximate location, hover your cursor over Your Houzz at top right. Click on Edit Profile. You may have to sign in at this point if you are not signed in. Go to Advanced Settings on the left. Then scroll down until you see the space for climate zone and type your information in there. Click update to set your preference.

I don't know what side of the country you are on but Forest Farm has the ZinFin Doll. You may get a small plant but it will be healthy and should perform well for you.

Really good nursery - mail- order is Joy Creek in Oregon. Their on line catalog is very complete and they are very nice if you have issues. Everything that i bought there arrived in great condition and went on to grow beautifully.

ophoenix, Joy Creek is a wonderful nursery. The plants are well grown and handled with care, their staff amazingly generous and helpful. I've been to their retail site and display gardens - it's not close but close enough for an occasional day trip.

They don't list either of the shrubs the OP was asking about in their inventory.

Check Proven Winners on line - they have a search for the nursery near you. Most large nurseries will order for you from wholesalers or growers like Proven Winners. I would hesitate to order a new cultivar - hydrangea or ? - from a mail order company without knowing if it has been trialed by them. Joy Creek, trials their plants for years to make sure they are hardy and stable. Perhaps you could call your local nursery to see if they can order them for you.

New plants are sometimes only sold at independent garden centers for the first couple of years before being allowed to enter big box retailers. So Bloomstruck may not be available at Menards for another year or two.

Joy Creek sounds like a great place to order but Hydrangeas Plus has more varieties I'm looking for. Has anyone ordered from them? They offer 1, 2, and 3 year old plants. I like the idea of being able to save $ by ordering smaller plants.

Both are in Oregon and both have good reputations on this forum. Hydrangeas Plus gives good assistance to questions by email. You can either same money with small plants or get immediate "results" by getting a large one. Enjoy the choices.
