Curtain Time!

last modified: 11 years ago

I'm in the process of redecorating my room (shout out to all the help
I've been getting here!). I just got the walls painted Iceberg by
Sherwin Williams. My walls are a light pale blue (yet slightly brighter
than I had thought they'd
turn out). I will be accenting my room with white, gray, silver, and a
touch of gold. Maybe even some blues and/or turquoise (haven't decided
yet). The trim is white and I have a medium gray berber carpet.

Tomorrow
(Saturday) I am going to buy new curtains at Bed Bath and Beyond. I
have posted pics of my very bare room below. I will be getting new
bedding, most likely white. At a later date I will be refinishing the
chest of drawers and table (color unknown, suggestions always welcomed).

I am thinking about doing a double rod for both sheers and
curtains. My window is 64" x 29", with the top of the window at 82".
My ceiling is at 95". I'd like to hang the curtains "high and wide",
ideally at 89". However, standard curtains are sold at 84" or 95".

Questions:

1. Do you think hanging them at 84" will still give the room the height I
was going for? (I am planning on hanging them wide.) If not, what
would be a good solution? What about hanging 84" curtains higher,
making them hang a couple of inches above the floor?

2. I'm going
for a winter wonderland glamorous look in my bedroom with a hint of
drama. My walls are very light (and slightly brighter than I had
thought they'd turn out). I will be accenting my room with white, gray,
silver, and a touch of gold. Maybe even some blues and/or turquoise
(haven't decided yet). I do have a medium gray berber carpet. Should I
go for white curtains with white sheers? Gray curtains with white
sheers? Similar color of light, pale blue curtains to match my walls
with sheers? Darker blue curtains with or without sheers? I don't want
my bedroom to appear dated or old fashioned. I want it peaceful,
feminine, glamorous.

3. I'll be getting a double bar to hang
the curtains. I just had an idea--what about hanging the sheers IN
FRONT of the curtains? Might be interesting. Thoughts?

4. I do
not want to invest in a pulley system and I don't like tie backs. I'm
considering grommets. Thoughts? Other suggestions?

5. I would
like to take down my closet doors and hang a curtain there instead. Then, I'd be able to put the chest of drawers at an angle in the corner to the Right of the closet. I'd
love suggestions for colors for curtains there, too. As well as thoughts or
other suggestions in place of closet doors. (Very tight budget if I
were to take closet doors down and put up curtains.)

Thank you so much for taking the time to help me. I truly value all the ideas, suggestions, and advice that you share with me.Here are the pics...

I would go with white curtains. They should just skim the floor. Don't hang them shorter than that. Have you seen the smock topped curtains? I think they would add a lot of texture to your room. PB has them. If budget is tight, I would just leave the closet doors as is. Maybe swap out the knobs for something more interesting. I would think twice about doing the double rod with the extra panels as it may make for too heavy a window treatment. Instead I would think about an inset shade. I'm thinking you want to keep the room light, bright and airy. This way you won't need tie backs or anything...just use the shade for privacy/light control.

Check out these while you are at bb&b. they will add texture and dimension. There are several colors I can see in your room. Panels

I would use the sheers behind the curtains, not in front. Also, I would use the 95" panels.

Have you considered switching out your fan for a nice aged gold chandelier? That would change the entire dynamic of your room.

Boy you're going to town! Usually it takes me forever to implement change in my house after getting advice and figuring it all out! Good job. I did order a light though based on help here. Big step for me!

Awesome, thanks all! If I buy the 95" curtains, then where shall I hang them? My window is at 82", the ceiling is at 95". Will it look alright to have them lay slightly on the carpeted floor?

aktillery9--thanks for the link! Yes, I am totally looking at adding a chandelier or plush crystal fixture. I posted some pics in my Winter Wonderland Glam Bedroom ideabook. Love your idea for aged gold; that could really warm up the space.

95" and put them as close to the ceiling as possible. Don't scrimp on the number of panels.

Oh, and do you have an IKEA nearby? You can get curtains and hardware there for much less than BB&B :)

    I second IKEA.
Or a Home Goods if you have one around for curtains/curtain rods and all kinds of additional things (pillows, accessories, picture frames, maybe lamps, small furniture pieces.)

I found these just now at BB&B! Would love to get your opinions to help make this room into a glamorous winter wonderland. I'm holding a painted swatch of my wall color next to each curtain. Remember, my carpet is gray and the trim is white. I will most likely be putting sheers behind them. Thanks so much!

The first pic is of a pearl white curtain

I love the bottom left one. The pearl is lovely as well! Nice job.

I like the gold embroidery on the Bombay, but maybe in white? That would be a great way to get some of the gold touches you're after. Did you settle on bedding? Or are you going to do curtains first, then choose?

I am wondering what happened I know I replied a few hours ago- I like the white pearl and my second preference is bottom left....... let's see if this post stays.

I like the two on the bottom. Probably the bottom left one, if you're also doing sheers. They'd be very pretty with a silver curtain rod with sparkly crystal finials. I can see them with white bedding with silver/blue/gray pillows, mirrored nightstands, and white and crystal accessories.

    • This is so much fun getting everyone's opinions and advice...and super helpful!! After buying 3 different pairs of curtains and trying them out at home, I will most likely go with the top right curtain (pictured above, within this thread). I loved the bottom left curtain yet when I took it home, the color just had way too much green. I personally wanted to go with the 95" curtains hung as close to the ceiling as possible with it slightly skimming the carpet. However, the "CEO" of the house very strongly wanted to do 84", so I will let him win this battle ;-) The curtains will still be hung "wide", just not "high". The window itself is 29" wide x 64" tall. ***What do you think--hang the expandable rod an extra 10-12" on each side of the window?***

OK...I'm about to order bedding! Most likely white. After much thought, I love the way a fluffy comforter feels. I so wanted to do beautiful coverlets and quilts. I just couldn't get past the idea of not having something fluffy on top of me. I'm thinking I like a pintucked look. Do you think that would look nice with a tufted headboard? My actual window is 64" x 29", with the top of the window hitting 80" from floor. I'll be hanging 84" curtains. I wanted to do "high and wide", yet will need to just do 84". Would it still look okay to hang them "wide" (even though they aren't high), like an extra 10"-12" on each side? Thanks so much for your suggestions!

Don't remove the closet doors! They make a statement.
