Supplement to previous: I also found another part number for the fuel pump, 491922 in the Briggs IPL listed as "387A" the previous listed number is "387."

The 808656 (or the 799056 same, but with the contorted hose) is the way to go. Really though, any impulse pump will work. you could test the old one by simply cranking with the output hose in a tray. As long as the impulse hose is not split, it should allow you to pump.

Thanks Tom, thought everyone here was hibernating or had migrated due to the houzz takeover and reposted at MTF. Just ordered a 808656 from Amazon, Briggs packaging, $10 cheaper than the local Briggs dealer. I did disconnect the line after the fuel filter and fuel flowed from the tank. Disconnected at the carb and cranked the engine, nothing.

I thought any impulse pump would work, but with all the aftermarket ones out there and the huge difference in price, thought I'd ask.

I'm under the impression that there are two types of fuel filters, one for gravity feed and one for a fuel pump difference being micron size. I have the right Briggs fuel filter, but when I dropped it below the tank, gas really came out, even though this is supposedly a finer micron size?

Well, that's the thing. Briggs has pump filters from 75 micron to 30. Some EFI get smaller yet. Gravity feed from 125 on down. There really are very few instances where the filter creates draw or vapor lock type issues on gravity feed to begin with. Media and filter volume can make a difference on some gravity systems though.
