Plant the seed so the hilum is upwards if possible, and at a depth of about 1 cm. Firm the soil gently over the top and side of the seed and root. As the seedling develops below the surface, the cotyledons will expand and lift out of the seed coat; the seed coat is held stationary by the soil and the cotyledons should slip out on their own. Sometimes you have to perform intervention if the seed coat stays on the cotyledons by very gently peeling it off the seed leaves.
