Thoughts on using this Decorative Tile?

last modified: 11 years ago

My contractor suggested this tile for an accent in my shower, run in a vertical strip (waterfall) from ceiling to floor behind the shower fixtures. He said he would seal it really good, but will this type of tile require on-going maintenance? Will we have to worry about how we clean it too? The rest of the shower will have 12x24 tiles of Daltile Florentine (Carrera marble porcelain) run vertically. Thanks to badgergal for posting the Daltile tile in a previous post in her DD's beautiful bathroom reno!

mrsshayne, that looks absolutely gorgeous! My husband said this morning, if he had to re-seal it later, he would. Not as easy a deal as yours because ours will be behind the shower head and controls.

If you're worried about sealing it because of all the stuff in the way, couldn't you put it on a clear wall like Mrs.S has? I like the uninterrupted streak of it!

I suspect your contractor likes it on the faucet side so he doesn't have to make those holes in giant tiles. :P But he can do it.

Thank you Jill. I really like the size and shape of your glass tiles. They will look great running vertically. I too almost ordered the longer rectangle pieces but picked the other ones last minute. I did order the same matching tile in squares and had them installed over the vanity. I love the looks. I was afraid it may be "too much" but after I saw how pretty the glass looked in the shower, I had the contractor go ahead and install the other glass above the vanity and around our tub area.

Be sure to post pics and stuff. I love seeing people's designs :)

I could run it on the wall with the insulation showing. When you enter the bathroom, you look straight at the wall with the water lines and the piece of plywood resting on it. Since it's in direct line of sight, I thought it made sense for it to go there since it's a "feature". The tile was his idea and the placement was mine.

Jill, is the accent tile the same thickness as your wall tile? If not, are you doing a pencil molding? I think if you use a pencil molding it will look too busy on the shower head side.

Jill - you have a great space! I almost think you could do two glass tile accents - one on each wall. Otherwise I think either wall will look good. Are you going to have some sort of wall where the bath and shower meet?

risforremodel - my accent tile was very similar in thickness to the ceramic tile used. If I would have went with real marble then I would have needed some type of pencil molding because the real marble was much thicker.

mrsshayne, frameless glass will rest right on the tub deck and no wall on the other side. I want a flat clean look and no pencil molding around the accent tile. risforremodel, I will verify with my contractor that the thicknesses of the two tiles will work with one another.

That will look great! Are you doing a niche in the shower? If so, you could do the glass tile in the niche and then do the glass wall strip on the side where the shower head will be.

There will be three niches running vertically on the left hand side of the rain shower head and control that will be on the accent tile. On the right hand side, will be a shower bar with another shower head. So everything is going on that one wall. The other wall is an outside wall and my contractor said if we placed niches there, they would be cold.

mrsshayne, do you have a picture of your vanity with the accent tile above it? I'd love to see more of your bathroom!

That sounds very nice. I still don't think the glass tile would look bad on the other wall since you have so much going on the wall with the shower head. I'm sure whatever you decide will look great. The tile is beautiful. I wouldn't hesitate to use it.

    Yes, thanks for asking :)

Here is what the tile looked like the day it went up (counter top was installed earlier that day)

Later that night I noticed the lights weren't centered with the faucets/vanity so the contractor patched them and we're doing can lights... (No grout yet)

Thank you. I can't wait for it all to be done. All this new stuff makes me way to nervous. Be sure to post pics when you're done. :)

beautiful mrs Shayne. love it. My hubby wants to do an accent tile over our vanity too. He likes Island stone waveline tile. what do you guys think of it? http://www.islandstone.com/product-detail.php?id=13&keywords=Waveline

what is your counter made of. We are looking at quartz

Thanks Edie! I love the glass tile you picked out. It's very modern and high end looking! I think it will go great with your modern feel bathroom. The sample picture on the link you included is awesome looking (with the Orange/guava tile) ...

Countertop is hanstone, color is aurora snow. It's very white with tiny specks. It was a remnant piece I found at a local stone yard and its Quartz. I was quoted $1600 for cambria. My remnant piece came in at about $1050.

I'm a big fan of exotic or unique granites but since I wanted super white I only wanted Quartz (I don't trust marble or super white granite). Well I take that back, I would have considered white granite but the stone yard didn't have any white granite remants so Quartz it was :)

Oh wow your bathroom looks great! mrs shanye/I was just looking at that aurora snow , we love it. We are having a hard time finding someone who will sell us only 17 square feet of it/ most places incuding Lowes etc have minimum footage required for purchase . usually above 25 square feet.and 96 inches I guess is hard to find in a remnant. your bath looks geat . I think I might steal an idea or two.

and if your wondering I still have that darn extra teak vanity sitting here. My hubby is is ordering either the teak or walnut cabinets from semihandmade after all the complaing about the too golden color of teak. man oh man. LOL

    Bathrooms reno could cause divorce/lol

Jill I would love to see your bat. We are at the tile stage.

Edie Nicosia - I was just wondering about that teak vanity you bought a while back. Just keep it posted on CL or ebay. Sooner or later someone may buy it. I just checked out the semihandmade website - wow it's fancy and looks nice. I didn't know places like that existed. And your hubby is considering teak even after you bought a teak vanity?? LOL.. smh... I can certainly see where tension comes into play during remodels. My husband keeps asking what stuff is costing but he tends to complain a lot so I don't tell him all the details :)

For my countertop, I simply googled "stone yards" or "granite yards" and called them one by one. Some places would not deal with the public directly but after about 4 calls I found a place that invited me up to see their remnants.

The place I used had several granite and quartz remnants to choose from. They carried Silestone and other big brands. I was so excited to find my piece. I almost picked swan cotton - it has larger specks but some of the specks looked dirty so I went with Aurora snow.
