The plan for "Scape Watch 2015"

last modified: 11 years ago

I just returned home after 5 days in Colorado...and moved many big pots out of the GH to just outside the GH door (where they can quickly be moved in if necessary. With the big pots in the GH I can barely take a step inside. The big pot of Giraffe is up to 8 scapes!

Other bulbs putting out scapes are: Aulicum, Lima, Lemon Star, Night Star, Baby Star, Sweet Lillian, Papilio (several), Red Nymph, Jewel, Lagoon, Magnum, Grand Cru, Splash, Jaguar, Avanti, Apple Blossom, Naranja, Pink Rival, Rosalie, and Tinkerbell.

I am trying NOT to look every day. I think every 5 days is a good interval as I should be finding many each time I look over hundreds of pots. It's disappointing to look and not find by 1 or 2, so if I wait longer I should be finding 5-10 at a time.

Most of these are rebloomers for me. A few a from bulbs that were gifts last October. There are other bulbs with scapes that I'll have to surprise you with when they bloom.

I couldn't stand it...I went out and looked and found 3 more scapes peeking out. This is such an exciting time of year!!

Sounds like a great year. It is too wet outside to check on my plants. Almost 5 inches of rain this week.

I do have about 20 scapes coming from my Komoriya Nursery bulbs. All new to me.

Yep, my backyard looked like a lake! My Komoriya bulbs were a disappointment. Many sitting like rocks with roots. Oh well...more for you!

The Komoriya bulbs seem to be much better this year. The roots and tops were not cut off. I have lost only one bulb which is not bad.

Maida, if you can, please post your Komoriya flowers when they bloom, I for one am dying to see them!

I didn't buy any after the big offering over a year ago. Just not good performers for me.

With the roots and top intact, they are preforming as well as the bulbs from anyone else. I rebought a couple of ones that I purchased last year because these are so much better. I will take pictures of the ones blooming and post them.

I agree with Maida, the Komoroiya bulbs are much better this time around! I rebought a Yume Mitai and it bloomed with 2 stalks shortly after I purchased it and of course they have lowered the prices on many of the older varieties. I also just purchased an Oriental Lady and it came with 2 stalks up about 2 inches and is doing well. Also I have a Salmon Taenia from way back that has finally rewarded my patience with 4 flowers, I'll post pictures soon.

Nancy, after seeing your Devil's Smile I think I will order one, they're only $10 these days and your Winter Butterfly is much prettier than the picture on EBay!!

But like Kristi I have half a dozen bulbs that have rooted and are just sitting like rocks, with roots!!

Lovely to see all the pretty flowers!!

My Devil's Smile looks promising, as do a few others; however, of the 20+ bulbs I bought, likely half are either rocks or lost due to other issues. I am pampering the survivors.

My Salmon Taenia is in full bloom now, I love the colors, a striking salmon pink and 4 flowers to boot! This bulb is from Aug 2013 and it grew roots but this is the first flower, no leaves yet though.

Next is my Judith (Australian) blooming. This is the 3rd year she has bloomed for me.

And my Yume Mitai, a new bulb I just purchased.

Love the colors of Salmon Taenia, Donna!!! I may have to have that one! It would be nice if he would drop the price on that one and a few others I would love to have. :) I wish I had been around when the Australian coop order was made. I would really love to have some of those too! Is there any way someone would be willing to do that again???

I really like the Devil Smile. It is so different to me and very vivid. I think the Winter Butterfly is much nicer in person than his picture too.

I haven't looked for scapes for about 3 days...and this morning I found 5 more hybrids with scapes poking out! My old Lady Jane, President Johnson, and Showmaster were today's finds. These are some of the bulbs I bought 7 years ago...and they reliably bloom every year. Double Dream is also sending up a scape. Things should be looking great in a few weeks. First to rebloom this year...H. Lima, then H. Jewel.
