It is quite sturdy. The joints between each partition are designed to cause some tension between the parts as they go together. This makes each individual joint quite sturdy and when they all work together to make a very sturdy. Additionally there are two tensioning cords that go crossways in the back further limit Side to side movement. The material is MDF with a melamine surface. The melamine is washable and very wear resistant. I use one of these units in my own bedroom at home and it has worked well for over a year.

Has anyone tried using this as a shoe cubby..?. I am looking for a solution for my walk in closet....
