I don't have any roses personally and I'm sure many will respond, but I do know that the Lady Banks Rose that is famous from Tombstone does come in yellow, will climb, and definitely has a nice smell. Its blooms are small. It does well in the desert. I want one someday. Ha.

Those 2 yellow Austins supposedly do well in Phoenix weather. If you contact the Phoenix rose society (website) or your local rose society they might be able to give you more details on them like which is a better bloomer and which is better suited as climber etc. Molineux is another yellow Austin that grows well in z9b. Other non-Austin fragrant yellow roses for z9b Julia Child, Radiant perfume.

I've personally grown several Austins, including Golden Celebration. Graham Thomas is a lighter color but both do very well in the low desert with some afternoon sun protection. I removed Golden Celebration because it didn't like the hot spot where I had it. The canes were very sturdy, indicative of a good climber. My experience with Graham Thomas were mostly thin canes but I pruned an older version trained as a climber and was very impressed with the thick canes. Any good climber is going to need some substantial canes to hold the canopy of leaves and blooms even when it's tied up just to keep from breaking in wind.

Molineux is not a climber and the fragrance is debatable. If you can do other colors besides yellow, and don't already have one, consider Abraham Darby. I usually stay away from Jude the Obscure since it seems to resent our low desert heat. Right now I've got about 10+ Austins but most are for container use, not in-ground. Also check out Pilgram and maybe Charlotte.

I have an Austin Alnwick rose we got about 3 years ago at Beridge Nursery - still going strong on the west side of my house . . . kind of misses morning sun in this location and then is shaded again in later afternoon by the house and wall to the west . . . BUT it does grow wonderfully and blooms great in it's location!
