i think straw bale gardening is best for one season and then restarting. The next year so I don't see where overwintering is a question. There are lots of varieties than are good as annuals (menards had then super cheap last year)

I just put in three new beds last year and uncovered two over the weekend. They look great. Stink with zone 4 plants

I think strawbale is cool, but I don't think you could put spring bearing strawberries in them and have them survive the winter. I had a hard time getting strawberries to survive in raised beds here. But what about day neutrals and keeping them for just one year?

in Joel Karsten s book he addresses strawberries specifically for a couple of paragraphs .
