The fixture is easy to change out, and you could use either a pendant, which would shine light downwards, or multiple adjustable lights on a bar so you could provide task lighting as needed to different areas in the kitchen. Centering the fixture will require an electrician.

I'd buy something like this one, if you can find one where the ceiling light wood matches your wood cabinets.

If you cannot afford a recessed lighting, I wouldn't change that florescent fixture. Sometimes function is more important than form anything that has less light output then this fixture will make your kitchen dark anything hanging will project like to the center of the room and create awful shadows for you. The only thing I would suggest if anything would be a updated fluorescent fixture light above. Or or a multihead fixture like the serpentine from cal lighting or track with track kids so you can aim at several locations.

I do not think you received the information you needed. A multiple hanging pendant light will work as the main source of light, however you will need to add some additional lighting, such as under cabinet LED lights on a dimmer, A single pendant over your sink and perhaps two small pendants over the peninsula. Fluorescent lighting is not very good any more as task lighting. Look at Lamps Plus.com or go to a local specialty lighting store for help.

Yes I was going to talk to my electrician about under cabinet lighting and do a none floresent in the middle we get alot of natural light in that part of the house so I am no worried about the island as it sits between the breakfast area and the kitchen light I am planing on changing the breakfast nook light to match the kitchen
