Glass plate...

What is the glass plate above the 3 hanging chains for? Does it help reduce shadow? I have seen this same lantern pendant without the glass plate, so was just curious. Thanks.

    Hi,

    This style is from the Early 19th Century, the glass cap was designed to keep candle smoke from the blackening the ceilings of homes.

    Do they sell the plate by its self? If so how can i get two. My lights dont have the plate and the lights fill up with bugs and dust very quickly.
