Okay so back story first so anyone reading this understands how my orchid is in the dismal state that it is in. I was given this orchid as a Christmas gift along with a book about caring for orchids (i love them and I have two others which are doing quite well however I am still a novice) anyway, I also have five rottweilers (3 of them are very destructive pups) and while I was home during the Christmas break the orchids were kept in my room. As my dad is a beekeeper and it came time to harvest the honey the dogs had to be locked away so they wouldn't get stung and they were put in my room where they proceeded to tear my beautiful brand new orchid to shreds and it has yet to fully recover. Ive doctored it, treated the wounds with cinnamon etc and re-potted but the leaves are limp and nearly all the roots are dead.

I've been
caring for it much in the same way I do my other two which are thriving
and it seems to finally be improving slightly (new roots are growing and I no longer have leaves shriveling up and falling off) but its
doing something I've never seen before. The larger leaves are still
intact, but mid last week I noticed something growing out the side that
was definitely not a new stem or root, I checked it again today and its
new leaves growing out the
side of the current base to which the main leaves and all the roots are
attached. Is this normal, why is it doing this? can someone please
explain this to me?
