I often have a good crop of them of all sizes. I think the moles and armadillos love them.
Your soil looks very nice also.
I killed a large amount of earth worms today, which I hate doing. I don't like to till, especially this late in the year, but it has been so wet this year which made getting the garden ready on time impossible.
We see them that big here. They are most likely the grub of the larger June Beetles and not the smaller May Beetles. Probably just about ready to become a beetle.
I dug up a lot of those this week and last week while adding compost to my raised beds. I do think they likely are exactly the ones Dorothy described. We have 60-70 species of various June beetles here in OK and they do not all have larvae of the same size. I three at least three different kinds of large green beetles here in southcentral OK in spring and summer: the large green June beetle that Dorothy described, the green Fig Beetle and another one that I think Larry posted a photo of last year that is very large and preys upon other garden insects. I forget what its name was, but I had one hanging around the northeastern end of the garden last year in April and May and perhaps into June as well. I usually don't have actual Japanese beetles in large enough to consider them a problem, but I'll see maybe 1 or 2 of those as year as well.
