New small bed

last modified: 11 years ago

Hello. New here, not to gardening but new to landscaping. This
exposure is a scorching southwest and is irrigated. The living room
window directly behind this gets some crazy heat. I put in a small mango
roughly 20 feet from the window in hopes to cast shade in years to
come. I'm comfortable pruning and won't hesitate to keep it's shape out
of walking paths as it grows. This is a new house and plot to me and
these things were chosen more because it's what I had around. I'm also
comfortable replacing and swapping things as it grows. It's 3 malanga, 4
aloe, several canna lily, 3 dahlia, 18 caladium, several wandering Jew,
and a mango.

Further on down the deck I plan to have many culinary and medicinal
herbs. Along the fence, I have planted dragon fruit, banana, pineapples,
bird of paradise, turmeric, ginger, Jerusalem artichokes, elephant ear,
caladium, guava.

Any thoughts on how these might do together in this spot?

Might want to double check on the cannas. Some like more shade than others and I think some (maybe most?) like to have their roots a bit more moist than the other plants you have in this bed.

The word malanga took me for a loop and I had to look it up, but it looks like this is the infamous Taro? Are you planning on harvesting these for the tuber? I ask because, if so, then they will be controlled, but otherwise they can eventually become a problem as they love to spread, especially if you are anywhere near water.

It is also said caladiums like shade more than sun. That said, people have often pointed out that the caladium growing fields in Florida are in baking sun and do just fine. I know mine last year took on a very washed out look by mid-summer with the sun beating on them.

Other than that, it looks like a good dry, hot bed set up.

I do think many of the above listed plants like very moist soil, so that is something to keep in mind...

I wouldn't mind harvesting the malanga (very closely related to taro) but wouldn't do it regularly. Probably just as they get crowded.

I have a pot of these caladium in the same spot on the deck and seem to be loving it (hence my hopefulness for this spot). I should mention that I have an olla in that pot so it stays pretty wet.

I thought it might be a bit much for the canna. Since my aloe tends to grow quickly, I was hoping it block a little of the lower portion/roots. I also pulled them from a spot that received full sun until about 2. As of now, they are shaded by the garage by 3. Not sure about summer yet.

Like I said previously, it is well irrigated. I do plan to mulch with coco fiber husk. The hay is temporary. I think that will blend well with the crushed shell I have in the walking paths and odd areas.

    Thanks for the feedback!

You might be able to establish some herbs like mexican tarragon and rosemary in the sunnier spots. They need a bit more water to get established, but then should grow well in full sun.

The Caladiums in my yard prefer more shade.

I thought you might like to see an update. This is exactly 60 days from planting. The malanga didn't get as tall and the canna shot up taller, than expected. I'm hoping the mango puts on some good growth this summer to get higher than the canna. So far so good.

Thanks! It gets standard sprinkler irrigation for 15 minutes, 3x a week plus extra from the small kiddie pool when it needs to get dumped.

How did the United States Postal Service plants do?

Love_the_yard...I questioned whether I should even answer...mainly because I'm not sure if I'm correctly interpreting, what I find to be, a pretty hilarious joke. Considering the timeliness of the USPS I can only assume you're talking about the wandering Jew and it could be doing better given the ample shade they are getting. I think Moses did it better. Thanks for the good laugh, and if that's not what you meant...it still made me laugh! No ill will intended, of course!

It was only meant to be funny - not a jab of any sort. I was referring to the USPS container in your top photo. Never noticed it before, until a recent review of the thread. I sometimes read posts two and three times - or more - when they have good photos.

OhEmGee!!! Of course my mind had to warp things! That box is a holding bin for some agave pups.

I'm glad you like the pictures. ☺️

These wandering Jew here are doing much better. So is the sugar cane. At this rate, I won't have to figure out a mulch for this spot.
