Needlepoint help

I need some help! I have a canvas that has no stitch guide. Can these be purchased? Can I do my own stitch guide? If so, how do I go about this?

These are the two that I have. Although I have been doing needlework for years, I have never done any needlepoint without a stitch guide and I need to know how to go about it. Any help would be appreciated.

The pattern doesn't scare me as I do lots of complicated pieces; I just have never chosen threads and stitches for needlepoint before although I have done it for different types of needlework. I thought someone might be able to point me in the right direction.
