I'd definitely wait until it has gained some momentum breaking dormancy, That will more readily help you identify how far up the stems the plant wants to grow. Not all budding nodes are equal, and it is a matter of finding the optimal balance. You want to identify the most vital ones, and prune off the others, but not go down to just one or two. There are competing processes, and it takes experimentation to build experience, meaning risk can only be minimized. I would strive for finding that balance.

Each species is individual, though there are general groupings, based on similar species and native environments. Discolor is one of the easier Andean species to grow, but it requires being nearly potbound with a fast draining soil to make it through a winter. It definitely likes a warm, airy, and only damp root zone.
