your choice was perfect, i always recommend people going from turned balusters to square to freshen a house, it can be decorated any way from historic to cottage/beachy and be perfect. i love the look.

Hello sscovanner, the chandelier worked very well in the space. We were pleased with the result. It actually came from another project. We recycled it (with the client's approval). It was in perfect condition and we were removing it from another project. Why not? So, I'm sorry I can't tell you more than it's beautifully crafted iron work and is about 3'-0" wide. Here's another photo of it as well as the before lighting.

I do like the new staircase....but the white is too stark for me. That green was much calmer.

White walls always remind me of apartment living...when you were not allowed to use any color!

Hi bungolowmo, the white paint isn't actually that white. It's a soft, mellow, warm white. The combination of the sky light above and the sun shining on the day we took the photos makes it appear more stark than it really is.

Nah. Sure it's beautiful, cleaner, more open and modern, but that curb appeal from before just has so much more character. I would have painted it white, added new fixtures, and stairwell bars, but kept that beautiful elegant curve for an emphasized grand staircase. I do love the transitional fixtures, and the lighting which the new one has makes such a huge difference! Bravo!

Looks great! The painted spindles are classic and timeless. Not to mention elegant. Metal tends to look trendy, so this works best. Good call on paint choices, and design.

The worst make over with the stairs ...

Great job! The curved stair and arched doorway were very dated along with the original hardwood. Bonus: bench on the left side of the stair landing and no weird space on the right to fill with fake plants!

While the re-do is modern I prefer the look of the older curved stairs and railing......there is something graceful about it!

If the owners like the new modern that's great, but my preference would also be the 'old' look as it had more character.

My bet is that original staircase had hardly any painted wood, that everything painted white is too stark and out of tune with a Craftsman house. The graceful curves would have been beautiful before being covered in solid out of character white. The redo brought the staircase back inline with the original bones of the house and looks well done.

Wow! So much right here, wood stair treads, white risers, straightened out the curve in the stairs. I bet it wasn't cheap but it looks fantastic. I am surprised that I have never noticed before how much better it looks not seeing the side of the step. The rise of the stairs in the before photo shows each step as it goes up and the after is a solid piece of wood. It really looks cheap the old way. Oh no, another pet peeve to watch for. Gah

I would have left the stairs and just removed the carpet, and painted the risers white, and have the steps in oak.

I loved the curve staircase maybe remove the carpet but, that's it oak stairs for sure.

I like the change in staircase design, but not the color change in the home.

Love the new railings and stairs! An "earth tone" paint color (tans, soft greens or gold) would be more in keeping with a craftsman look.

It looks like you also restained your hardwoods to match the stairs. It looks beautiful and hope this doesn't come off negative, but I was hoping to see the after picture with the curve kept in the stairwell.....curved, but with the hardwood. It still looks so much better than before though!

Just a few comments on the previous comments to clarify. The project began with a change in wood flooring. We matched the stairs to the new wood. Taking the curve out was not necessary, but makes the whole area more functional in terms of furnishing around all sides of the stairs, so worth making the change. All in all successful and the clients were ecstatic with the result! Thanks everyone for your comments!

Great transformation. I love square spindles on a staircase. It gives it a very clean cut look. We did sometime similar in the new house we purchased. The only thing I would have done differntly is to have different color on the wall to create more contrast between the walls and the staircase.

The after looks nice, but I would have saved my money, it must have been a fortune to have new stairs put in! I would have just done the hardwood and painted the railing and maybe added iron spindles. The curve to me was just lovely!

what was the price tag, including to demo? This is a major project , but does the end justify the means? I would have just changed the pickets/spindals for wrought iron. and oak treads and paint risers. There's lots to consider when tearing out a set of stairs. But I does look very nice , Great Job!!!

Beautiful! The old look wasn't bad either, but the new one definitely gives off a more modern feel. More pristine and clean-cut, I like it.

I will always prefer wood to carpeting, but there is something about the charm of an older house with its curves and character, that a modern house just cannot match
