I'm in zone 6b.

If you cut back now you will cut off the buds for this year's bloom. Trimming after the flowers have gone by will also coincide with the time the plants are putting out the most vigorous vegetative growth. There's really nothing to be gained by doing it now, but it will not do any harm, either.

Yeah, I'd wait until June, normally. Did they get any damage to them? If they got real damaged from the winter, they may not have a spring bloom at all, in which case you could trim earlier. On mine, I selectively trim back only a few of the longest branches each year.

Thank you both for your suggestions. Because they're Encore Azaleas (bloom in May, July, and September), I'm going to cut off buds no matter when I prune. I guess I thought I'd get it done now in hopes of having blooms again for July or September....

Here is what they say on encoreazalea.com:

If you think your Encore® Azalea needs pruning, do so immediately after the spring flowering for maximum bud set.

Light pruning of more established plants will stimulate growth and flowering.

Prune tall shoots back inside the body of the plant.

What about in the Fall?

If you prune later in the year, you will be clipping off the buds that have set for the next bloom cycle.
