Washing polyester quilt tops?

Hello,

My granny recently gave me a couple of quilt tops. I would like to get them quilted, but they smell, and I really think they need to be washed before I take them to a quilter. Is this a huge no-no? They are mostly polyester (I'm guessing double-knit?). Any thoughts?

Also, what type of fabric would be best for the backing and binding? More polyester? I was thinking maybe flannel for the backing, but I don't know if that's appropriate. Also, is there any specific batting I should request? I want it to be lightweight and not stiff.

Thanks!
