It grows fine here outside from about March until December (temp. above 10 degrees C). But it`s on the moist side though and does not appreciate to dry out completely.

My exact thoughts, as whwo's.
I would spend all day in the kitchen to look at it.

Would love to trade with you again Nick (since I have a potential interest list of plants from your green house) but I`m not sure whether I can ripp this cutsie apart. Maybe after the blooms are gone.

When I trade away a plant I cherish, I often find it possible to remove the old back bulbs, this leaves the growing and blooming part of the plant intact and it never misses a beat. The back bulbs will eventually initiate and make a new plant. I have no problem receiving back bulbs.

I have one of these and it is my favorite orchid of my entire collection. When I purchased mine it was labeled Dendrobium atroviolaceum 'Pygmy.' However, it is my understanding that is should be labeled normanbyense. Orchid Digest had an article on normanbyense in 2010 presenting it was a distinct species from atroviolaceum.

Sorry to say Darlene that it should NOT be labeled normanbyense.

This is the same sort of situation where a noted authority gave species names to some varieties of Dendrobium speciosum and that got widely accepted but not by the gods at Kew.

It is all part of this peer review stuff in Science which I do not understand.
