I have a 300 gallon Rubbermaid stock tank sunk into the ground. I've used various sized pumps over the years. I use the ones that will go into that rectangular pump/filter box and is submerged. (can't remember the name).

Here's my question: I've recently cleaned out a bunch of leaves/muck and realize that the filter/pump might need to be stronger. I assumed that if the pump is putting a nice strong stream of water up out of the water, that the pump is strong enough. But would a stronger pump clear the water better? I need a pump that I can control the flow, since I don't want the stream of water blowing out of the pond! Am I assuming correctly that if I had a stronger pump, it would bring in more water through the filter and clean it out better? (even though the pump I have now puts out a strong stream of water)? Or is cleaning the water more of a filter issue? What type of filter would you recommend for such a small pond?
