I think the crown rotted out at some point...maybe it's trying to send out another leaf (I'm not sure).

elizabethk1, I have to agree with dbarron, either it lost the crown to rot, ot perhaps the crown and a couple of new leaves got broken out in shipment. Really doesn't matter because your photos look like there is no rot present at this point.

I would continue to grow the plant like any other Phal. If it still has blooms, enjoy them. You are not going to be the one to determine what the plant will do from this point.....It will do that.

Just grow it on and see what it decides to do. It will either grow out from the crown, or it may form a double crown...that's two plants down the road a few years...or, it may just throw up another offshoot from the main stem somewhere. (usually down just below the surface of the potting mix).

The only caution I would offer would be not to let water stand in that "hole" where the crown was. That is a choice spot for rot to set in. If it gets water in there wick it out with a small sponge or something, just to be on the safe side.

Sounds like a fun project for you for the next few years, figuring out what your new acquisition is going to do.

Thanks for the responses. I'm glad you (Bill) suggested that I keep it. I'm one of those plant buyers who takes immediate ownership at purchase and gets attached. I really didn't want to return it. I think you are right - several things may happen, and some quite good. So, grow it I will. :)

I can't really tell from your picture what is happening. Looks like you lost the crown. If so, return it as the large plant will die. It might send out a baby plant but it will take years for that to flower. If it were my plant I would return it. You will lose your money on this one.

I agree with Jane. The crown is gone, and even if it's possible for it to recover (which I doubt), it would take years. As one who has rescued a few phals, I understand wanting to keep it, but it would be foolish to pay full price for an orchid that damaged. Without a crown, it's a goner.
