I use pine shavings for mulch. They are not my first choice, but cheap and easy to use. My largest complaint is critters like to get in them, like any other mulch. The ones I use are from a sawmill ( rip-cut) and have nothing in them.

I used some pine shavings from a show pig pen last year. I didn't use them for mulch. Instead, I worked them into an area of heavy clay. It's pretty amazing how nice the soil texture is, compared to the surrounding area. I would take a train load and use it as mulch in a heartbeat.

I don't know if it makes any difference, but some show animal feed has antibiotics and steroids. I'm sure some of that is passed on in the shavings.

Our show pigs probably have some antibiotics but not steroids. and I don't know if it makes a difference either. I actually was more worried about the pine. I am just looking forward to getting my trees mulched. we lost 8 year before last in drought and I am getting these set up so that doesn't happen again.

Thanks for the idea to use pine shavings. I'm guessing it would be okay to use in the garden too as mulch. My baby chicks use pine shavings and a bonus is their poop is in/on it. I've just been throwing it away. duh.

Well I have been at this school 4 years and I have never thought to ask, I usually don't go near the ag barn. But when I found out they had rabbits I started with that manure and now I have a 20' tall pile of shavings to get. I hope it helps my little orchard. I almost lost a large pear 2 years ago when I was really sick and they got no water for months.
