Nice! I have a few friends who grow asparagus, so I never bother. I noticed my horseradish roots started pushing out some green tops this last week. My rhubarb is nowhere to be found though, I am getting anxious.

We haven't seen any here yet, also in 6b.

But we have a heavy layer of shredded leaves on it so the ground stays cooler longer.

It was hot here this winter so we harvested our first asparagus in late February, which is just ridiculous. I mulched it heavily to try to slow it down, and the two late snowstorms helped too. As soon as the snow was gone, the asparagus popped up and we've been harvesting it for a couple of weeks now. Everything in my garden is early because of the early heat. Today I noticed some warm-season plants have emerged: tomatoes, basil, and moss rose. Cannas and peonies have emerged. Four o'clocks and daturas are sprouting. It feels more like April than March here at our place. It was 81 degrees here today and I loved every minute of it.

The 1 rhubarb plant we kept in the greenhouse all winter never went dormant, but the six new ones I planted this winter just emerged during the last week.

The oak trees are even leafing out. It is like Spring is running on Fast-Forward.

Dawn you sure are right about being ahead. When I was planting my corn I saw volunteer watermelon seedlings where I had the patch last year. I love when I dont have to work very hard. Of course Im rearranging where things go so Ill remove them but it was neat to see.

Today I found volunteer seedlings of fennel, dill and other assorted herbs and flowers. I weeded around them when I saw them and will dig them up and move them where I want them after they are a bit bigger. Right how most of them are about 1/2" tall.

I like early. Everything was early like this in 2012, when we actually had adequate rainfall in spring, and we had a great garden. I don't think I had to start watering until sometime in June. I couldn't even keep up with the harvest and was constantly running behind. It won't hurt my feelings if this year continues to be similar to 2012. This morning, as soon as I walked outside into the 50 degree heat, a mosquito flew right into my face. That's one early thing I could do without.

The early watermelons are a cool thing to find----that tells you that your soil temperatures are nice and warm. I haven't found any early squash, cukes or melons yet, but sunflowers and zinnias are popping up. Maybe for once we won't have the Easter freeze.

So far a random group of spears popped up away from the rest of the established crowns. Will asparagus spread over time? The bed is about 6 years old. So far I have only got one spear from the rest. Not sure what is going on.

Some of the older asparagus varieties will spread by dropping seed that sprouts and gives you new plants in random places. Is that perhaps what you're seeing? When mine do that, the brand new seedlings are small and pop up in random spots....like in the middle of a pathway, or right up against the wood plant that edges the raised bed. Or, does it look like it spread underground and came up with big, thick spears in a new spot? That would seem highly unusual to me. My plants spread by getting wider in diameter over the years....

Many of the newer hybrids are supposed to be sterile and not drop viable seed.
