You can if you are very careful. Once the main stem gets
more than a few inches, though, I deem it too risky. The stems are more brittle
than people realize. The taller is is, the more likely it is that the lily will
not achieve full growth in its new location this year, or bloom. The following

I remove the root ball from the pot, if it is plastic, I
may even cut it off. I soak the soil and let it sit awhile. Following each stem
downward to its bulb with my fingers, I pry them apart. I don’t use tools for
this; it’s too likely to do damage.

Lilies like full sun, though. If the pine tree overhangs
a lot it will be too shady for them.
