Need more Streps like this one

This is Heartland's White Gold which I've had for nearly a year & in that time it has rarely been without blooms. It seems to grow well whether it's under lights or on a windowsill. My other streps have been stingy with their flowers, but this one just keeps them coming. Terri

Thats a lovely variety! I've had mostly good luck with Rob's Bristol series. I hope to order a few more streps but right now I am mostly out of room. . . perhaps when I'm finished culling.

Ooo, they are both beautiful! :-) I love the white one. I never would have went for it if I'd have seen a bloom up close, but when you show the blooms with the plant.. wow. Beautiful. That's one gripe I have about buying online is they only show the bloom! I want to see the foliage too, so I can see what kind of picture it makes together. I think about such things. :-)

I regret to say that you can't expect that yours will look like that...all kinds of factors will affect the foliar layout.

oh ok - that makes sense. i have yet to have a streptocarpus plant in my hands... so i am still very new to all this. although two of my leaves have FINALLY rooted and i see the tiniest evidence of growth! :)

Those are beautiful streps! I haven't had one for years. Someday,,,,,,--Rosie

I now have some strep cuts! yay!!!! Don't see evidence of babies yet, but I will be happy if they just survive!!! Never rooted them before. Wish me luck! Rosie

Well, my little strep cuts didn't survive. (sad face). BUT, Never give up! I will try until I get it right.

Maybe I need to start with an actual plant first. I will think about that. Rosie

I love these so much, maybe once I get another AC unit my house wont kill them off in the summer time. In the interim, at least I get to enjoy all these gorgeous pictures! Bistols oriental art and heartlands white gold are definitely on my wish list.

I started a folder with photos of some of my streps in it if you want to have a look. Most of the Bristols are heavy blooming and a lot of the Dibley's hybrids. They also tend to stay smaller, compact, like Dale Marten's Heartland series. You may also like Little Khan. https://www.pinterest.com/ornerypony/streptocarpus-i-have/

    Oooh, nice!

    Seriously, your collection is AMAZING.

My AV's are doing well, I have 2 grocery store NOID's now, and 3 smaller ones I have propagated from suckers. The biggest has already bloomed once. My oldest blooms regularly, and now have a Nematanthus and trying some lipstick vine cuttings.

Now my big challenge is to keep temps cool enough for them over the summer. If I succeed, there are a few lovely Streptocarpus at the Violet Barn I want to get, as well as a Petrocosmea forrestii. Hopefully my little plan works!

If it does, can you recommemd any sources for Streptocarpus and Petrocosmea?

Well, the typical answers are Violet Barn, Out of Africa, (and there are more, but my brain isn't awake yet). I'm sure someone else will chime in with some.

I maintain streps and gloxinias, AVs, and a thriving primulina tamiana with normal household temps (70 in winter, 74 in summer).

Sadly, Gary (Out of Africa) has retired from selling, so no longer an option. There are also some really good sellers on Ebay where you can get varieties that the "stores" don't always carry. Lyndon Lyon carries them as well, though I've not ordered from them before.

    Best,

    Judy

Awwww, to bad about Out of Africa. I have ordered AV's for mothers day for my mom in the past from Lyndon Lyons, no issues. I like Violet Barn, have only purchased Hoya from them but like them if only for the Hoyas. I can get a few gesneriads, and if a Hoya accidently finds its way into my basket, then even better. :)

Some of the older Streps - from Dibleys - 'Gwen', 'Bethan' - are everblooming. 'Falling Stars" - which is a sport of a Streptocarpus johannis - is amazing - smallish vinca blue flowers are in abundance all the time.

I second Irina on Falling Stars and Gloria both (Gloria's the pink version of FS) that they are hardly ever without lots of blooms. I'm with you on the heat issue, Kim. Last summer was pretty hard on my streps so I need to work to keep my art studio cooler this summer.

I did not know Gary was out of business...sad. I never got to order from him, though had thought about it several times.

He can do more fishing now!

But...irina...I don't want to mail order fish from him. :)

I think Gary is enjoying some quality time fishing with his grandchildren. I talked to him one time, asked why he doesn't attend Gesneriad Conventions anymore - and he said that he prefers to spend this time with grandsons - that's when they come to visit.

There was an interview with him - I think on podcasts - so sorry they are not accessible anymore. He was growing his plants in a modified crawl space. And I was thinking - Gary is a very fit guy - but one day he will be tired of crawling..

I have a crawl space under our house and it is as tall as a full basement on one end. It is designated as a crawl space because the floor hasn't been dug out and is dirt. It gets increasingly shallow towards the other end of the house. I keep thinking about growing plants down there and aging cheeses.

Wow,, streps, cheeses and maybe mushrooms????? YAY!!! That almost makes a pizza!!! Rosie

Does anyone know the name of this one?( Earlier today)

This foto is what I was trying to upload earlier. Whew! Finally did it.

    Anyone know the name?

    Thanks,

    Linda

    Oh Irina,,,very lovely color! Rosie

This an outstanding hybrid by a Canadian hybridizer and a friend of mine Maureen Mark. The name of this plant is "Red Hot Sandy" - it cast iron, compact to medium size, flowers last very long and have lot of substance in them, leaves are strong and fleshy, strong solid bloomstalks..grows really well - window or light. It is not huge and frilly as Polish Streps - but it is a gem in its own right. Just like her husband Sandy I guess.

It sure is a beauty in my book!!! (oops! I meant my Wish List!!! lol) Rosie

Rosie, your wish list IS a book! ;-)

And I'm right with you there. Gotta get a Red Hot Sandy, too. Wow.

hahahahahaha You got that right!!!!!! Rosie

Beautiful strep photos. Know where I can buy some strep leaves, anyone? Thanks. June

ebay would be my guess. It is kinda way too hot to send leaves...
