I bought a C. schilleriana x C. aclandiae plug a few days ago and try to decide now wether to mount or pot it. How do you grow your schilleriana?

I am growing Cattleya aclandiae on a cork mount. That is how it came from the nursery and it is doing well. Might flower on the next mature growth.

Primary hybrids with Cattleya aclandiae as a parent do ok in pots with perhaps a slightly more arid mix than the usual "Cattleya" mix.

Over the years haven't seen many plants of Cattleya schilleriana. From memory they were in pots. Rare about these parts and I'm not sure if this is due to difficult culture or there are just none for sale.

I have tried and failed twice with aclandiae. I purchased both in pots. Mounted one, and it went directly into decline. It took 4 months but it died eventually. I lefted the other one potted. It is in decline also.

I was hoping schilleriana would be slightly more accomodating. after more thought, I did what Eve did and bought a hybrid.

Finally decided for a compromise and put my mini Catt in a wood basket. I left the plant in the little bit of coco husk it came in and nestled it with a few bigger bark pieces and a little bit of sheet moss to keep the bark from falling out in the smallest wood basket I had. That way it can take its pick to either grow in the medium or on the wood of the basket.
