We used our shelter for the first time last night. No damage here but it is still dark. We were in it almost an hour.

When they mentioned possible tornados in the NE part of the state last night, I wondered if you were close. I'm glad you are okay. How's everything today?

We are fine and nothing damaged, but the ground looks like a lake. Two tornado touch downs that we know of, one at Afton and the other in SE Kansas. Some structural damage and a semi flipped on I-44. Our friends in the Afton area lost power, but it has now been restored. We stayed in the shelter a lot longer than normal last night. Al and I are reading this fantastic book on the New Testament and we usually read at night. As the storms began closing in, I suggested we just sit in the shelter and read. Well that was a joke and lasted about 5 minute. We could hear the TV which we would lose, then it would blast back on with a severe weather report, the weather radio was going off every minute and we just had to give up. I unlocked the front door and turned on the porch light and the Grove sirens started going off. At that point the neighbors (2 families) came running for shelter. We had two cells headed straight for us but one came across the lake and appeared to go across the south side of Grove, and we also had one coming from Afton toward us. I was watching it on my Kindle, but really wanted to get a better view than I can get on a mobile device. By this time the rain was extremely heavy and we were getting some hail mixed in with the rain. I checked my desktop computer and decided we were safe at that point and we could endure the rest of it.

I know it doesn't sound like a big deal that the weather radio was blasting, but we keep it loud so we can hear it anywhere in the house, and also in the shelter. We are so close to Kansas, Arkansas, and Missouri, that we get warnings for all three, plus Oklahoma, so in this kind of storm it is just almost constant. As soon as Tulsa finished the broadcast, it would start for Springfield as the cells moved across us. LOL

That's why I don't stop by much, or read most of the threads, here. I keep my thoughts on religion and politics on my Twitter feed. @GrumpierRedNeck

No. I don't 'do' religion. It's fine if you want to, but don't expect to see me here, again. Freedom is weird like that. ;)

I came here for the gardening. ...but we're not really Doing gardening, here, are we. We're doing evangelism. ;)

WHUT? Why the drama because you were reading a book about the New Testament?! I thought that was a side note to the shelter, which was related to the weather, which was a comment about the gardening... it's all full circle, ya know?

The oklahoma corner of GW Houzz is not just about gardening. From what i can tell it never has been. We are all friends here and any life threatening event weather or otherwise is welcome to be discussed. Any personal information expressed is to be respected.

Carol, It was such a relief to read this and to learn you and Al, your place and your neighborhood emerged relatively unscathed.

As usual, I stayed out in the garden until it was almost dark and then came inside and noticed all the Severe Thunderstorm Warnings and Tornado Warnings not only in NE OK but also in adjacent areas of KS and MO. Of course, I saw the warning that included y'all and I texted Tim and said "I bet Carol & Al & all the neighbors are in the Safe Room". See how well I know you?

I also was concerned about Helen as her area near Joplin had constant severe weather for what seemed like hours. I was watching the live reports from the TWC reporter in Joplin and each time he did a live report, he was reporting hail, strong winds, lightning, heavy rain or something. I hope Helen is okay and that her home, yard and garden are alright.

If y'all had been too dry, you aren't too dry any more. I hope the lake in your yard is soaking into the ground really fast.

Now, if only NE OK can get through the Easter Freeze and its Frost Warning, everything will be hunky-dory for Easter.

I am sorry you had such a rude response from a member of this forum. Fortunately rudeness is rare here as we have an awesome group of members.

If there's any sort of plants you lost in the storm and need to replace, be sure to let us all know as the Spring Fling is just a few weeks away.

Lisa I'm glad this thread made you sing. Believe it or not, it made me laugh. Thanks for your concern everyone, and yes Dawn, you know me well. I didn't lose anything last night but had to throw more soil on the sprouted pea seed that washed up, so the birds didn't discover them. We have a forecast of 33 tonight, but I don't think I have anything out there that will be hurt. My pepper and tomato plants are still inside (with heat for the night), the peas are young enough that they shouldn't be bothered. I don't think it will be cold enough to bother onions. Anything else would not be a big lose, or is still below ground. I must admit that it is much quieter tonight. Thanks to all of you for being so kind.

I called home at 6 AM this morning (am away right now) and my wife informed me that it was 32 F! Yikes! I'm so glad I chose to play it safe and bring my seedlings back onto the sun porch while I was away. We may have lost our peaches for this year, though. I have learned not to sweat it over the peaches. We will or we won't lose them, and about nothing I might do will change that!

There does seem to be something to the local saying that we will have a last frost just before Easter and, then, after that, it's safe to plant outside.
