Small juniper bonsai

last modified: 11 years ago

My wife bought me a small, reputedly 5 year-old juniper bonsai from Amazon last November. I carefully followed the instructions from BonsaiBoy as to how to overwinter it in an Unheated garage here in Zone 6.

I checked it dutifully over the winter and when the weather warmed I set it outside in a shaded, protected area. The other day when I touched some of the branches they simply crumbled. I think it has died despite being in what looked to be good shape last winter.

I have never lost a houseplant and I consider myself a decent gardener and caretaker of outdoor potted plants in the summer and aware of the dangers of overwatering etc.

Any ideas what could have happened? I had set the pot in a Styrofoam cooler (without the top of course) covered the pot with pine straw to insulate the roots.

Should I leave it alone and see if there is any life left or is this a lost cause?
