The furniture is great, but there is too much going on. I suggest the following:

1. Curtains. Get semi-transparent white[curtains like this[(https://www.houzz.com/photos/aster-transitional-living-room-dc-metro-phvw-vp~1293905). It will add height to the room. Your current window treatment is boxing the room in.
2. Area rug. Get a contrasting area rug for the dining room. It will divide the room up a bit and ad more texture. Something with a little color will help.
3. Mirror. Replace the larger print hanging on the wall above the sideboard with a mirror. It will help open and brighten the room up.
4. Chandelier. Replace the dining room light with something more rustic and contemporary, [like this lamp[(https://www.houzz.com/products/kichler-lighting-42046ch-everly-one-light-pendant-prvw-vr~9861053).
5. Remove unnecessary furniture. You can likely purge yourself of one side table and a chair. The room is a bit cramped (Sell it on Craigslist - use that money to purchase the above recommendations). :)
