Macho Fern Maintenance

I filled a bed with Macho Ferns a few years ago and they
looked great. I had some tree work done
which damaged half the bed and I ran the string trimmer through that half and
took the ferns to the ground. It took a
long time for the trimmed Machos to come back, but they look great and stand
about 2' tall. The half bed that was
never cut back is almost 4' tall and does not look as good.

What is a good long term maintenance practice for these
large in ground ferns. Should they be
cut back to the ground, trimmed back 50% or what? Does foliar fertilization have any role in keeping
them looking good or should it all be ground fertilization?

The first two pictures show the cut back ferns (side/top views) and the second two pictures show the never trimmed ferns (side/top views).
