Using unions on valves and filters?

I'm getting ready to install a new drip system. I am using a single Amiad 200 mesh filter in front of the valve manifold and then Rainbird anti siphon valves in the manifold with pressure reducers on the other side of each valve. I'm wondering about using pvc unions around the filters and valves. I know in the past I've not used these and had to deal with cutting and splicing the pipe when something inevitably goes wrong. Unions would avoid that but I wonder about the long term stability of the O ring in the union. Most home irrigation systems, once installed and working, can go years without attention, will the O ring hold up for years? Are they worth using?
