Why Ninebark instead of Sevenbark or Fivebark?

I have tried googling the question about the name of the shrub Ninebark. How did it get this common name. Every link just repeats that it's called ninebark because the bark sheds but that doesn't answer the question. Does anyone know why it is called ninebark? I am referring to the shrub Physocarpus opulifolius. Thanks
