What to do if you don't like window treatments? Install outside?

We just installed new windows (Marvin Double Pane Wood) in our home. We have good ocean views from two bedrooms and no privacy issues. But we want some way to block out light for early mornings and afternoon naps. The windows are 10' wide. We aren't real fans of window treatments, so we were thinking of a couple options:

  1. Electronic honeycomb blackout blinds hidden in a valence inside the home. The valance would go all the way across the top of the wall from corner to corner (like crown molding) and the shade could be raised and lowered remotely.
  2. Electronic exterior roller shades. Attached to outside of the home under the eaves. This is our side yard, so they wouldn't bother us too much. They have solar powered options so we don't even have to hard wire.

Any advice? Can we leave our windows without treatments inside? Is that a normal thing to do? Thanks!

PS. Yes the current curtain rod is too small for the opening ;)
