Yep, I've been adding char to my garden. Not enough yet to make any noticeable changes to the soil's structure or fertility, so if that's what you're interested in, I can't really report anything on that. If you're interested in the carbon sequestration aspect of biochar, then I can say that from what I've read, the effect is real. Charring biomass releases a pulse of co2 - though less than if you had simply burned it - and converts 15-40% of the carbon in the feedstock to charcoal. Charcoal resists oxidation for a long time (most studies give figures in centuries to millenia or more) so it represents a longer-term carbon reservoir than dead vegetation, which decomposes and releases its carbon content back to the atmosphere after some time.

How much of a net sequestration benefit you're going to get in the long run might be limited to some degree by the fact that your feedstock is cedar. Cedar can take many decades to decompose.

Thanks, Andrew. I'm in touch with OSU Extension for Lincoln County and hope to get their help in cutting down the cedars without breaking the bank. The possibilities of creating biochar (over an extended period of time) provide some sense of purpose along with cedars' undesirable attributes being eliminated.
