Azaleas can be grown in pots. Check the Container Forum on Gardenweb for excellent advice on planting mixtures. The most important thing to do to avoid problems is to provide very good drainage so that the medium does not become saturated with water.

After a bit of reading I learned that they don't like to dry out. So I planted them in a good potting soil. The blooms fell off of one and it grew like mad. The other is all blooms and few leaves. I cut the blooms off yesterday to get more growth.

"Potting soil" can mean many things. Some of what's sold in bags is worse than useless. Other products are good. It is true that azaleas do not like to dry out, but good drainage and lots of oxygen at the roots are even more important. The best mix for azaleas would contain no soil at all. It would have acid pH, coarse particles of peat or coir and something like perlite to insure good drainage.

Miracle grow. It is light and fluffy. When I repot I will add perlite and one bark. I can watch my watering for now.

Miracle Gro potting soil should be grouped right up there with what maine calls "worse than useless." It gets extremely poor reviews - too fine a particle size, excessively moisture retentive and rapidly breaks down into a soggy sludge. For growing woody plants like azaleas in containers you need a very durable, bark-based soil. Check out the Container Gardening forum for soil mix suggestions that would be much more appropriate (look at the 5-1-1 or gritty mix in particular) and give your potted azaleas a much better chance at a long life.

I wont repot them again. We will see in the spring.
