Sandy soil is usually good for azaleas and rhododendrons because it provides the fast drainage they need. Is there anything you need to know? Yes. You need to know the pH of the soil and its nutritional content. Your County Extension Service can do a soil test and provide you with valuable advice, including the need for any supplements.

You do need to be careful not to plant any deeper than the azalea was originally growing. That fine network of surface roots can't function if planted too deep. If you amend your sandy soil with more organic material, plant slightly high to allow for later settling. How large are your plants...you can assume the rootball extends as least as wide as the widest branches but it will not be particularly deep. If your plants are quite mature and good sized, aim for a rootball that equals in diameter about 2/3s the plants height if possible.
