First, what happened to the forum?! I haven't been around for a while, and it didn't save any of my login information. I had to create a new account. Everything looks different.

Second, I just received my cuttings from UCDavis, but lucked out on two of the ones I wanted most.

1.) Black Madiera

2.) Malcom's Super Giant

Also, for years I've been asking around and searching for a cutting from a Sal's fig. So far, no luck. Any chance any of you have a tree with cuttings? I know SOMEBODY has them somewhere.

About 7 years ago or so, I ordered a very expensive Patrick's Super Giant. It came looking not-so-healthy, and had a colony of fire ants in the pot to boot. It eventually died, and I swore I'd never buy from them again, but I still wanted to get a hold of that fig. Is anyone here growing it successfully?

I also have a large list of figs that I started about 8 years ago, and for the life of me, I don't recall why they made the list of "wants". I have a lot documented, but these were just on a list by themselves. (needless to say, I've accumulated a lot of information over the years, trying to decipher the enigma of the synonym phenomenon. At any rate, I'd love to discuss these others with anyone who is willing.

Obviously, I have a keen interest in the really big figs, but also the tastiest ones as well. I have friends documenting yearly tests on their various fruit, nut, and vegetable growths with a supplement that has doubled, tripled, and even quadrupled their size, along with improving the nutrients and even making fruits score higher on the Brix scale. Normally, fruits that grow larger tend to be less sweet, but that is not the case with this particular mineral fertilizer/supplement. I eventually want to do this with my figs, and see where it leads.

I'd love to know the ones that score higher on the brix scale, and what is the supplement? Marylane Seedless has to be one scoring high. Plan to test with refractometer when ripe.

Hi Erinfigs,

Bigger the fig size more sun and heat it will require to ripen to perfection.

Hope you have long summers in your zone. Some cooler state fig growers have hard time seeing a ripe large fig doe to lack of long summer heat. For them Brebas are good but hardly ever get to see a nice main crop. So they tend to stick to smaller, darker figs which could ripen fast. Also each variety has a bit different ripening dates. By choosing the suitable variety for your zone makes the whole difference.

as to the forum...I think it has been redesigned and face lifted so everyone had to reset their accounts.

I have few Sal's (EL) but they are still this years rooters, If things go well and they are big enough to have some cuttings from I'll gladly share. If you don't get any cuttings until then, Remind me after October ? :)

Hi everyone! Forgive my absence. I made another recent post yesterday because I couldn't find this one. Still trying to figure this forum out. A search didn't pull my post up. Also, I got just a tad busy for a while and didn't come on.

Suzi, I will have to see if I can get that info. Not sure if the tests have been done specifically on figs, but they've done on many other fruit, nut and vegetable plants. The results are impressive, and I wanted to try it on figs. It's basically desalinated seawater (or sea salt water, if you don't have access to the ocean) - lots of trace minerals and magnesium, among others.

Aaron, I live in Beaufort, SC - plenty of heat for sure! Our winters are mild with the occasional frost, but I have everything in containers. It really doesn't start to get cold here until January or February.
