sinks and windows

I see it said here frequently, that sinks do not need to be lined up with windows. And I agree, if the function is affected. But I also think a lot of us have a knee jerk reaction that says that they just....SHOULD be. And surely everyone would agree that it would be ideal. But how many hoops to jump through to achieve it?

Can anyone show pictures where they have done this in their own kitchen? Or pictures from elsewhere that show off-center sinks?

We did not center our sink on the window. Prior to the reno we had about 10 - 12 inches of countertop on the right side of the sink and then the fridge...completely useless. I was more concerned with the function of the space rather than centering the sink so we pulled the sink over so that it was flush with the left edge of the window giving us about 22 inches of counter. One major benefit is that the center mullion of the window is not smack dab in my line of sight when standing at the sink. Here's a "during" pic that shows the sink positioning...I gotta get some "after" pics done while everything is still fresh and new!!!

Thanks mamagoose for all those! Helps to have the visual.

Dcward- eagerly awaiting your reveal! That totally looks fine.

I was just wondering how many gwebbers had done this because I see it mentioned frequently as unnecessary. I have a preliminary layout for a someday remodel where the sink isn't centered and I'm fine with it, but somehow I keep trying to think how I could scootch the sink over to get it centered! I'm not even a symmetry person!

My current kitchen sink is off-center, and it doesn't bother me at all (though maybe because I'm distracted by the bigger layout problems!). The plan for the remodel is to center the sink on the left side of the window. The range is going where the fridge is currently, so moving the sink left gives me a bigger prep space between sink and range.

My current sink isn't centered on the window and I really didn't even realize it until I started working on my new layout. Really wasn't an issue. In my remodel, my sink still won't be centered. I'm going for a smaller prep sink there as we're adding a larger clean-up sink elsewhere. I'm also going for a taller, goose-neck pulldown faucet. I think a tall, noticeable faucet that's not centered would bother me but the sink not being centered doesn't bother me at all. So I'm going to put the faucet not centered on the sink but, instead, centered on the window. I think it will be just fine.

I think it's not as obvious when the faucet is lined up in the middle. The off-set sink is much more obvious, when the faucet is completely out of balance. Just my two cents :)

Of course, if it's away from the window...and that area becomes a prep space, then it looks really inviting, too. It would be great to have a view while you're prepping. With dishwashers, we would all probably spend a lot more time enjoying the view in our prep space. When we're not using sharp objects! LOL

oooof, caligirl, that frig! I can understand why the sink doesn't bother you!

Yes, funky, the tall faucet would probably be more of a problem for the looks than the sink itself. So how far off center on the sink will the faucet be? I don't know how I would like that either...

LL, the window will be 6 feet wide so there will be plenty or room to look out all around:) If it works out like I'm planning, I will also have a window in front of my baking counter. Can't wait! I'm currently cooking in a kitchen with no windows; feels like torture on these beautiful spring days! OK, so not torture. But I dislike it;)

Our sink is off center. The faucet is centered on the sink. Before the faucet was installed, I barely noticed the sink. With the faucet installed, it is quite obvious and bothers me a bit, but I was content to live with it. I did deliberately pick a faucet that is under 12" tall so it wouldn't be so bad. But we have successfully created symmetry and a focal point in a kitchen that had no obvious way to do it, and the sink was the only thing we couldn't get in line, so I was prepared to call that good enough.

HOWEVER, earlier this week someone here posted about the Kohlet Indio single sink, and I have since spent too much time agonizing about what could have been if I'd known that sink existed. The Indio would have totally solved the issue in our particular kitchen and would have looked great. Sigh.

Months ago, I considered installing the faucet off-center, but it would have had to be way to the left to be centered, and as an extremely right-hand dominant person, I thought that would annoy me way more. Also, when you spray out the sink, it just seems more ergonomic to have the faucet in the middle. The faucet is used constantly and seriously needs to be functional, and I didn't want to compromise it just for looks.

P.S. I have to say that the pictures mama goose just posted all look totally fine to me. It makes me very sure that when I have relaxed into my kitchen some more, I will feel fine out about our off-centered sink and faucet.

I'm not home and don't recall the exact measurements for how offset the faucet wil be from center but it's a 24" prep sink and the faucet will be few inches from the corner of the sink. If this was my new 32" single basin clean-up sink, it would look ridiculous, imho, and wouldn't work due to reach issues. In a smaller prep sink, I don't think it will be an issue. The faucet isn't as short as Jillius bought but it's also not one of those super-tall ones. I think 15"? It's to the right side of the sink and I'm right-handed so I think it will work just fine and look OK. My current faucet is off-center on the window, centered on sink, but it's one of those old-style, really short ones, with a side sprayer so it doesn't raise up into the window area and the fact that it's off-center from the window isn't an issue due to how short it is. Hope that makes sense.
